Presidential Primary Election to be held January 31.

Early Voting for the Presidential Preference Primary: Saturday, January 21, to Saturday, January 28, from 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m., at the Apopka Community Center/VFW, 519 S. Central Ave., Apopka, and nine other sites throughout Orange County.

Old Florida Outdoor Festival: Friday, February 10 at 6:00 p.m., Saturday, February 11 at 10:00 a.m., and Sunday, February 12 at 10:00 a.m., at various venues at the Northwest Recreation Complex, 3710 Jason Dwelley Parkway, Apopka. Concert headliners are Jake Owen on Friday, and Tracy Lawrence on Saturday, along with other events such as fishing, hunting, fly fishing, conservation demonstrations, archery, Swamp Brothers appearances, DockDogs, local Farmers’ Market, rock climbing, chili cook-off, a petting zoo and much more! Registration for Adult Softball League: The Apopka Recreation Department offers men and co-ed adult softball. All leagues must have a minimum of six teams. The spring league begins February 20 and will run 10 weeks. The fee is $405 per team. For more information, call 407-703-1784.

Kickball Sign-Up: The Apopka Recreation Department is looking for adult co-ed teams to participate in the spring kickball league. Registration began January 9 and will be ongoing until February 13. The season will be 10 weeks long and starts on February 20. Cost is $250 per team, and games will be played every Monday night. Sign-up Dates for Youth Girls Softball: Registration for Apopka Babe Ruth league girls fast pitch softball will be held January 31; February 2, 4, 7, 9, and 11. Tuesday and Thursday registration is at 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., and Saturday registration will be at 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., at 797 Wells St., at the Apopka Athletic Complex (behind Apopka High School). Registration fee is $80.

Self-Defense Classes for Women: Beginning in February, the Apopka Police Department will hold a five week class for college-bound females. If interested, call Capt. Miller at 407-703-1771.

Foliage Sertoma Club Meeting: The first and third Tuesdays of the month at 12:00 noon, at the Catfish Place, 311 S. Forest Ave., Apopka. To reserve space for luncheon, call by the Friday before, or for information, call 407-889-5305.

Man to Man Prostate ACS Cancer support Meeting: Held the second Tuesday of every month, from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m., at the Apopka **Area Chamber of Commerce. The meeting is for men who have prostate cancer, or would like more information about the disease. For more information, call Till at 407-341-1826.

Citizens’ Program: The Apopka Police Department will hold 12-week program designed to give citizens an understanding of procedures and personal knowledge of the Apopka Police Department and Fire Department. The program is scheduled to begin February 2, and will be held every Thursday from 6:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m., at the Gilliam Training Center, 321 E. Cleveland st., Apopka. Those interested can pick up an application at the Apopka Police Department, 112 E. Sixth St., Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Hospital Health Course Offered: The Living Healthy Program at Florida Hospital Apopka designed to help those with chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, arthritis, diabetes, cancer and more. Call 407-625-7048 to learn more about free chronic disease self-management courses.

Free Educational Hands-On Programs: The Orange County Fire Rescue Department offers free programs such as CPR, citizen’s fire academy, home safety surveys, preventive health care presentations, and several other programs and services. Seniors Meals on Wheels: is looking for volunteer drivers. The routes are open Monday through Friday, each route taking about an hour. Anyone who can give an hour once a week, please call 407-615-8982.


Events for SATURDAY, JANUARY 28

Nature Hike: 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m., at Lake Idamere, 12335 County Road 448, Tavares. Led by park rangers, the 1.5 mile hike will identify plants, birds and other wildlife. After the hike, participants are encouraged to explore the park’s amenities that include a dog park, fishing pier, boundless playground and pavilion. Hikers should wear appropriate clothing and footwear, also recommended to bring insect repellent, sunscreen, drinking water, binoculars and field guides.
